Japan organised the Winter Games after 26 years (the first time in Sapporo in 1972) and those were the second Games staged outside Europe and North America.
For the first time the programme included snowboard, curling was reinstituted, and hockey was opened for women. For the first time the hockey players from the American National League (NHL) were eligible for the ice hockey tournament, but the gold, nonetheless, went to the Czechs.
Norway’s Björn Dählie won another three gold medals in speed skating raising his Olympic medal total to 12 (8, 4, 0) and became the most successful “white Olympics” entrant of all time.
Japan’s Kazuyoshi Funaki earned two golds and a silver in ski jumping.
For the first time the Winter Games saw the participation of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, thanks to the IOC “wild cards”, but without notable achievements.
