The Games were staged after only two years in order to separate the Summer and Winter Olympics.
Manuela Di Centa of Italy earned medals in all five cross country events (2, 2, 1); Switzerland’s Vreni Schneider won a complete set of medals (1, 1, 1) in Alpine skiing; Canada’s Myriam Bedard triumphed in both biathlon races.
Norway’s skater Johann Olav Koss, today an IOC member, earned three golds and set three world records.
Yugoslavia missed its third Winter Games (the first time in Lake Placid in 1932, the second time in Squaw Valley in 1960 because of the high travelling costs and slim odds of achieving high rankings), this time due to the sanctions which prevented Yugoslav athletes from qualifying.
