      These were the first Games held during the terms of office of the IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch.
For the first time the German Democratic Republic won the most medals.

The only woman to take part in six editions of the Games, Marja-Liisa Hämäläinen (later Kirvesmiemi) won three golds and a bronze. Twin brothers Steve and Phil Mahre took the first and the second place in the slalom. The US skaters Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean made it to the legend with their rendering of Ravel’s “Bolero”.
As the host nation, Yugoslavia had a large delegation (debuts in speed skating, bobsleigh, luge and men’s figure skating) including the ice hockey team. Jure Franko won the first Winter Olympic medal for Yugoslavia on 14 February when he ranked second in the giant slalom. Križaj lost a medal again.
