      The Games had been awarded to Denver (USA) but as the city withdrew in 1974 due to the opposition of public, Innsbruck stepped in, twelve years after hosting its first Games.
Tatyana Averina (USSR) won the most medals – two golds and two bronzes in speed skating, but more successful was Alpine skier Rosi Mittermaier, who had missed the third gold by 12 hundredths of a second.
For the first time the ice dancing was included in the programme. The USSR won their fourth consecutive hockey gold.
Yugoslavia competed in Alpine skiing (Bojan Križaj debuted with the 18th place in the slalom) cross country skiing and ice hockey (the 3rd place in group “B″, the 11th place overall).

Candidate cities: Denver, Sion, Tampere/Are and Vancouver.
