Keiichi Suzuki (speed skating).

      For the first time the Games were held outside Europe or the USA.
For the first time the officials' oath was sworn.
Galina Kulakova (USSR) triumphed in all three cross country races.
One of the best skiers of all time Karl Schranz of Austria was barred from taking part in the Games by the IOC on the grounds of violation of the amateur principle.
Japan won its first Winter Olympics gold by a triple victory in the 70m ski jumping: 1. Kasaya, 2. Konno, 3. Aochi.
Yugoslavia participated with four ski jumpers (Zajc remained in Moscow due to an illness), an Alpine skier, a combined skier and the ice hockey team. The best-ranking athlete was Pudgar who finished 8th on the 90m jump.

Candidate cities: Banff, Lahti/Are and Salt Lake City.
