Official opening of the Games by: Governor of the State of New York, Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Olympic flame: the first time in Oslo in 1952.
Olympic oath: John Shea (speed skating).
Official oath: the first time in Munich in 1972.
Number of medal-winning nations: 10.
National medal total:
1. USA 12 (6, 4, 2).
   
                   
      Eddie Eagan (USA) by winning a bobsleigh gold became the first and, so far, the only athlete to win gold medals in both Summer and Winter Olympics. He had won his Summer Games gold in 1920 in Antwerp in the light heavyweight boxing championship.
Sweden’s Gillis Grafström tried to win his fourth back-to-back figure skating gold (he won his first gold at the 1920 Summer Games) but he only managed to medal the silver.
Sonja Henie (Norway) defended the figure skating gold.
For the first time Yugoslavia did not take part in the Games as the Yugoslav Olympic Committee had judged the travelling costs to the USA too high.

Candidate cities: Montreal (Canada) and the US cities Bear Mountain, Yosemite Valley, Lake Tahoe, Duluth, Minneapolis and Denver.
