WINTER UNIVESIADES

The first Winter Universiade was staged in 1960, and was preceded by the World Student Games held for the first time in Cortina d’Ampezzo in 1928. Prior to the Second World War the Winter Universiades were staged in Davos in 1930, Bardonecchia in 1933, St. Moritz in 1935, Zell am See in 1937 and Lillehammer in 1939.
The International Students Union (ISU) renewed the Winter Universiade in 1947 (Davos), and following a division within the international students movement the International University Sports Federation (FISU) organised the Winter International University Sport Week in Bad Gastein in 1951, in St. Moritz in 1953, in Jahorina in 1955, in Oberammergau in 1957 and in Zell am See in 1959. The International Students Union (ISU), on the other hand, staged its winter games in Poiana Brasov in 1951, in Semmering in 1953 and in Zakopane in 1956.
The international students sport movement was reunited as FISU in 1959 and the first Winter Universiade took place in Chamonix in 1960.
Yugoslav student-athletes participated in the 1st Winter International University Sport Week in 1951 (1 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze), the 2nd Winter International University Sport Week in 1953 (1 gold), and hosted the 3rd Winter International University Sport Week on Jahorina (2 gold, 2 silver, 4 bronze medals). At the 4th Winter International University Sport Week in 1957 Yugoslav student-athletes won a gold and a bronze, while at the 5th Winter International University Sport Week in 1959 they medalled a gold, a silver and a bronze.
Yugoslav student-athletes won a total of 18 medals at the Winter International University Sport Weeks (6 gold, 4 silver, 8 bronze).
Yugoslav student-athletes took part in every Winter Universiades so far and won a total of 23 medals - 4 golds, 8 silvers and 11 bronzes.
