Ivan Gubijan

Ivan Gubijan |
Ivan Gubijan The first Yugoslav
track-and-field athlete to win an Olympic medal was Ivan Grubijan,
who medalled a silver in the hammer throw. He made it to the finals
following the intervention of Artur Takač and Milan Kovačević, the
Yugoslav team officials, as the judges had forgotten to book his
throw. The throw placed him sixth in the qualifications and took him
straight to the finals. Gubijan threw 54,27 m in the finals, a
result surpassed only by Hungary’s Imre Németh (56,07 m), who had
set a fantastic world record only two weeks before the Games - 59,02
m. Grubijan was also the first Olympic athlete to throw a hammer
after four spins. Other throwers, considerably higher and stronger
then him, would throw after two, or three spins, but the technique
he devised is used even today. |

Ivan Gubijan was born in Bjelovar on 14 June 1923. He took up football
and gymnastics. Having moved to Zagreb, he dedicated himself to the
gymnastics and the throwing events under the renowned coach Pedro Goić.
He won his first title at the Croatian Championships on the eve of the
Second World War. The war over, he moved to Belgrade, where he still
lives, and became a member of “Partizan”, the club in which he had spent
his entire sporting career.
He was a five-time Yugoslav champion in the hammer throw (1948, 1949,
1950, 1952 and 1953), and he bettered the national record five times
from 56,24 m (Belgrade, 13 October 1947) to 59,69 m (Istanbul, 14 August
1955). He was a two-time Balkan champion (1953 and 1955), and he took
part in the European championships three times (he failed to pass the
qualifications in 1946; ranked fourth in 1950; and was seventh in the
qualifications in 1954).
He also participated in the Helsinki Olympic Games in 1952 and ranked
ninth (54,54 m).
Having finished his sporting career, Ivan Gubijan worked as a physical
education teacher, and as a throwing coach in “Partizan”, “Čukarički”
and “Milicionar”. He fashioned many national team athletes and
record-holders. |
