The return of the Games to the
country of its birth was a success. A record-breaking number of nations
and athletes took part in tournaments held at the extraordinary Olympic
venues of Athens. The shot putters made a trip to the ancient Olympia,
and the 42,195m runners ran the classical marathon course – from
Marathon to the Panatinaikon Stadium.
The organisation of the Games was immaculate, and all the participants
commanded the safety and the hospitability of the hosts, especially the
army of volunteers.
The Games were marked by the fight against doping in which 23 athletes
were found positive, including six medal-winners (3 gold-medallists, 1
silver-medallist, 2 bronze-medallists).
The most successful were the US athletes, but were closely followed by
Russia and China, the host of the next Games.
Serbia and Montenegro participated (for the
first time under that name) with 87 athletes in 14 sports and won 2
silver medals - Jasna Šekarić (air-pistol) and
the water polo team.
Candidate cities: Buenos Aires, Capetown, Rome and Stockholm
(short-listed). |
|

The most successful athlete: Michael Phelps (USA) won 6 gold and 2
silver swimming medals |
