      After 44 years Australia again hosted the Games (first time Melbourne 1956).
A record number of athletes and participant nations resulted in a record number of medal-winning nations – 80, and the excellent organisation renewed faith in the Games and the Olympic movement somewhat lost in Atlanta because of the transport problems, informational system…
The opening ceremony saw North and South Korea marching behind the same flag, but they competed in separate teams.
Britain’s Steven Redgrave (rowing) won his fifth medal at his fifth Games and became the first Olympian (not only rower) to achieve this. Germany’s Birgit Fischer became the first female Olympian to win a gold medal (two actually) after 20 years.

Yugoslavia participated with 111 athletes in 14 sports and won 3 medals - gold was won by men’s volleyball team, silver by Jasna Šekarić and bronze by men’s water polo team.

Candidate cities: Beijing, Berlin, Istanbul and Manchester.
 
The most successful athlete: Marion Jones (USA), won five medals
