      In the Centennial Olympic Park on the night of 17 July at 1:25 am, following the anonymous tip (“There is a bomb in the Centennial Olympic Park, you have 30 minutes to find it”), a home-made bomb exploded, claiming two lives and injuring another 112. The IOC decided that the Games should continue, and the Park was re-opened on 30 July. The perpetrator was never apprehended.
For the fourth consecutive time, Carl Lewis triumphed in the long jump as the fourth Olympian to achieve this feat and with nine gold medals equalled with Paavo Nurmi (Finland), Larysa Latynina (USSR) and Mark Spitz (USA).

Yugoslavia participated with 68 athletes in 13 sports and won four medals (1, 1, 2). The gold and a bronze were won by shooter Aleksandra Ivošev, the men’s basketball team won the silver, and the men’s volleyball team the remaining bronze.

Candidate cities: Athens, Belgrade, Manchester, Melbourne and Toronto.
 
The Hero of the Games:
Michael Johnson (USA), the first athlete to win titles in the 200 and 400m with an amazing world record in the shorter dash (19,32)
