The USSR reciprocated American
boycott of the Moscow Games. The decision of non-participation was
expounded by co-called “security reasons”. Another 18 nations of the
Eastern block joined the boycott (all except Romania).
For the first time women competed in the marathon and cycling (road
race), and the first Olympic champions were America’s Joan Benoit
(marathon) and Connie Carpenter-Phinney (cycling). Morocco’s Nawal el
Moutawakel became the first female African Olympic champion, the first
female Islamic athlete to win an Olympic medal and the first Moroccan
Olympic champion.
Yugoslavia participated with 140 athletes in
16 sports and won a record number of medals - 18 (7, 4, 7). Gold medals
were won by the men’s water polo team;
the men’s and women’s
handball teams; Šaban Trstena;
Vlado Lisjak; Matija
Ljubek and Mirko Nišović (C-2); and Anton
Josipović.
