For the first and only time
the American athletes did not participate in the Olympic Games due to a
boycott led by the US president Jimmy Carter and intended to punish
Moscow because of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Many other
countries joined the boycott (Germany, Japan, Canada … - a total of 58
nations), but not all the nations of the western alliance as Carter had
expected. Many of them left the freedom of choice to their athletes,
i.e. National Olympic Committees to decide whether or not to go to
Moscow, so the Russian capital welcomed the British, the French and the
Italians (their medals were celebrated with playing of the Olympic
anthem and raising of the Olympic flag).
Yugoslavia participated with 164 athletes in
17 sports ranking 14th on the national medal total list with
9 medals (2, 3, 4). Gold medals were won by the
basketball team and Slobodan Kačar (boxing).
Candidate cities: Los Angeles. |
|

The most successful athlete: Aleksandr Dityatin (USSR), the only
athlete to win eight medals at the single Games |
