A total of 29 nations (27 of which were African) left the Montreal Games. However, Cameroon, Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia were numbered among the nations who competed in the Games, as some of their athletes had taken part in different tournaments before their governments decided to withdraw their athletes.
For the first time women competed in basketball, handball and roque. Irena Szewinska (Poland) won her seventh Olympic medal in five different events, Klaus Dibiasi (Italy) triumphed for the third consecutive time in the platform diving, and Viktor Saneyev (USSR) in the triple jump.
Yugoslavia participated with 88 athletes in 14 sports and won a total of 8 medal (2 gold, 3 silver, 3 bronze) that placed 16th on the national medal total list. Yugoslavia’s golds were won by Matija Ljubek and Momir Petković.
