Official opening of the Games by: Emperor Hirohito.
Olympic flame: - Yoshinori Sakaï, the first baby born in Hiroshima after the atomic bomb.
Olympic oath: - Takashi Ono (gymnastics).
Official oath:
- (the first time in Munich in 1972).
Number of medal-winning nations: 41.

      For the first time the Games were held in Asia, and the choice of the final torch bearer lent this act a political character. It was Yoshinori Sakaï, the first baby born in Hiroshima after an atomic bomb destroyed the city.
The American swimmer Don Schollander won what was then a record number of medals in swimming – four golds, he also set three world and an Olympic record; Hungary’s Deszö Gyarmati won his fifth consecutive medal, and the first marathoner to defend an Olympic title was Ethiopia’s Abebe Bikila, even though he had appendectomy only six months before the race. Judo and volleyball became Olympic sports.
Yugoslavia took part with 76 athletes in 9 sports and won 5 medals (2, 1, 2). Miroslav Cerar and Branislav Simić won golds.

Candidate cities: Detroit, Vienna and Bruxelles.
 
She made it to the history of the Games:
Larysa Latynina (USSR), brought the total of her medals to the record-breaking 18 (9, 5, 4)
