      For the first time there was TV coverage of the Games on another continent – North America, more precisely the USA, as CBS paid $394,000 for the TV rights.
For the first time an Olympic athlete triumphed for the fourth consecutive time at the Games. Denmark’s Paul Elvström, following his triumphs in London in 1948, Helsinki in 1952 and Melbourne in 1956, won his fourth straight gold in the Finn class in Rome.
Boxer Ike Quartey (Ghana), a vice-champion in the light welterweight division, became the first black African athlete to win an Olympic medal, and Abebe Bikila (Ethiopia), who triumphed in the marathon, became the first black African Olympic champion.
Yugoslavia participated in the Games with 120 athletes in 14 sports, and the only two medals were won by the football squad (gold) and wrestler Branko Martinović (silver).

Candidate cities: Lausanne, Detroit, Budapest, Bruxelles, Mexico City and Tokyo.

 

 
The most successful athlete:
Wilma Rudolph (USA) won gold medals in the 100m, 200m and 4 x 100m relay

  For the first time Olympic medals were won by Ethiopia, Ghana, Morocco, Singapore, Taiwan, Iraq and the British West Indies* whose team was made up of the athletes from Jamaica and Trinidad.
