The Games were held under the threat of the increasing Nazism intended to demonstrate the superiority of the Aryan race, and the endeavours to take the Games away from Germany had failed.
For the first time the Olympic flame lit in the ancient Olympia was carried to Berlin by a torch relay to the Olympic Stadium where it burned from the opening ceremony to the closing ceremony.
The programme featured two new sports – handball (the Games host’s choice) and basketball, both in men’s competition only. The handball played in Berlin was played on a football-size court with 11 players in each team, and Germany triumphed. Basketball was played outdoors in a tennis stadium on clay and sand courts, and the first Olympic basketball tournament was won by the USA team (they scored 152 baskets, received 69).
Yugoslavia competed with 86 athletes in 11 sports, and the only medal was won by gymnast Leon Štukelj.

Candidate cities: Barcelona.

The most successful athlete: Jesse Owens (USA), four gold medals (100m, 200m, 4 X 100m and long jump)
