For the first time since 1900, the great economic crisis halved the number of the participants, but did not jeopardize the quality of the competition (18 world records were set). The Games lasted for 16 days (the shortest Games lasted 79 days).
For the first time the medal ceremonies took place immediately after the end of an event instead of on the last day of the Games. For the first time the victory stand and raising of national flags in honour of the victors were introduced during the medal ceremonies.
The first Olympic village was erected in Los Angeles - 550 two-roomed cabins were intended only for men, while female athletes stayed at a hotel.
Even though the YOC decided not to take part in the Games because of the high travelling costs, Yugoslavia was on the participants list thanks to athlete Veljko Narančić who covered his own travelling expenses to the USA and competed in the discus throw.

Candidate cities: no other candidate cities.

The most successful athlete: Mildred “Babe” Didriksen (USA) medalled two golds and a silver
