For the first time, a white Olympic flag with five multicoloured interlaced rings symbolising continents and their union fluttered above an Olympic stadium. The flag’s design was made in 1914 but due to the war six years had to elapse before the flag had its “premier”.
For the first time a representative of the athletes took the Olympic oath. The nations held responsible for the First World War were excluded from the Games: Germany (also in 1924), Bulgaria, Austria, Hungary and Turkey.
The Finns excelled in athletics. Hannes Kolehmainen won the 5000m, 10,000m and marathon race. The streak of nine Summer Olympic Games triumphs that ended in 1928 had been commenced by his fellow countryman Paavo Nurmi.
Yugoslavia debuted at the Olympic Games participating in every edition of the Summer Olympic Games since. Eleven Yugoslav athletes participated in Antwerp, or to be more precise only the football team - without the substitutes.

Candidate cities: Amsterdam (Lyon withdrew just before the voting).

The most successful athlete:
Nedo Nadi (Italy) won five
fencing golds
