Boxing was temporarily taken from the programme, because Sweden would not organise “inhuman” competitions. For the first time, women competed in swimming and diving, and modern pentathlon became an Olympic sport. After the Games the IOC made a decision that limited the power of host nations to influence the Olympic programme.

For the first time the Yugoslav athletes took part in the Games. They were the representatives of Serbia and were sent there by the Serbian Olympic Club. At the IOC Congress held during the Games the Serbian Olympic Club was admitted to the IOC as the Serbian Olympic Committee. Its founder and director, infantry captain Svetomir S. Đukić was elected the IOC member.

The first Olympians of the Kingdom of Serbia were Dušan Milošević, who ranked third in the 100m qualification group and marathon runner Dragutin Tomašević, who ranked 37th.

Candidate cities: no other candidate cities.

The Hero of the Games:
Jim Thorpe (USA), the winner
of the pentathlon and the decathlon was disqualified because of violation of principles of amateurism, but was rehabilitated in 1982
