For the first time the Olympic creed saying that “the most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part” was publicly proclaimed, and its creator, a Pennsylvanian bishop, uttered it at a mass held at St. Paul’s Cathedral on 19 July.
At the opening ceremony the participants of the Games paraded before the royal box at the Olympic Stadium, dressed in the Olympic “uniforms” behind their country’s flags.

Oscar Swahn (Sweden) who won the running deer shooting gold became the oldest Olympic champion of all time, and he pushed the limit up to 72 years and 279 days by his Antwerp triumph.

Serbia and Montenegro were still out of the Olympic affairs, and the first athlete from these parts to win an Olympic gold medal was a British water polo player and swimmer Paul (Pavao) Radmilović (originally from Boka and Dubrovnik). Radmilović was a member of the champion water polo team and the best 4 x 200m freestyle relay, and he also won gold medals in water polo in Stockholm in 1912 and in Antwerp in 1920.

Candidate cities: Berlin, Milan and Rome (Rome had been chosen initially, but withdrew due to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and adverse economic situation in Italy).

The Tragic Hero:
Dorando Pietri (ITA), the marathon winner who was disqualified due to the assistance of the officials

MONTENEGRO

Montenegro missed the opportunity to be one of 23 participant nations of the Olympic Games. The British king Edward VII invited king Nikola Petrović to send the Montenegrin athletes to the London Games. The court in Cetinje contemplated whether or not to send their “heroes” in three sports – throwing, wrestling and tug-of-war. Finally, it was decided against participation in the Olympic Games, as the Montenegrins were of an opinion that the sport was a luxury and a waste of money that was anyway scant in the national treasury.
