The Games turned out to be a failure, as they were organised as a part of the World’s Fair and lasted for over five months.
For the first time women participated in the Games, and the first female Olympic champion was Great Britain’s Charlotte Cooper who won the tennis gold.
Due to the World’s Fair organisers’ whim, international teams, or doubles, consisting of athletes from different countries were entered for football, polo, rowing, tug-of-war and tennis tournaments.
America’s Raymond Ewry in a single day triumphed in all three standing jump events.
Serbia and Montenegro did not participate, but Milan Neralić, originally from Slunj, was amongst the medallists. He won the bronze medal for Austria
