      The first Olympic champion was James Brendan Connolly (USA) who won the triple jump with 13,71m.
The winners were awarded silver medals and certificates and “crowned” with olive wreaths; the runner-ups were awarded bronze medals, certificates and laurel wreaths; all the other participants were presented with copper participation medals.

The athletes of Serbia and Montenegro did not participate in the Games. However, king Aleksandar Obrenović and his entourage attended the first Games at the invitation of king George I of Greece.
However, one athlete originating from these parts, Momčilo Tapavica from the village of Nadalj near Novi Sad, took part in the Games. He won the bronze medal in tennis for Hungary, and also took part in greco-roman wrestling and weightlifting tournaments.
At the first IOC Session held from 22 to 23 June 1894 it had been decided that the Games of the first Olympiad would be held in Athens.
